Communications to scale global clean energy initiative Mission Innovation 2.0.
Greenhouse
Today, 23 governments, responsible for 90% of global public investment in innovation, will announce a commitment to collaborate and invest billions in clean energy innovation across power, hydrogen and shipping, through Mission Innovation 2.0.
This is the most significant inter-governmental clean energy initiative globally in the run up to COP26. It will result in more than $250 billion investment into clean energy, research, development (RD&D) and demonstration over the next 10 years and accelerate towards achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
Launching at the global Innovating to Net Zero Summit hosted by the Chilean Government, Mission Innovation 2.0 will strive to make clean energy affordable, attractive and accessible for all this decade.
Achieving the Paris Agreement goals requires huge leaps in clean energy innovation this decade. Half of the global emissions reductions required to achieve climate targets by 2050 depend on technologies that exist today, but are only at demonstration or prototype phase.
Mission Innovation 2.0 will spearhead a decade of innovation, catalysing public-private action to drive global investment in RD&D to accelerate the development of clean energy solutions in critical areas and reach tipping points this decade in their affordability.
This is the second phase of the Mission Innovation initiative, launched alongside the Paris Agreement at the COP21 conference. Since 2015, Mission Innovation has stimulated a cumulative total of USD$18bn more investment in innovation. These investments have supported nearly 1,500 innovations, with the potential to avoid more than 21 gigatons of CO2 per year by 2030, if fully deployed.
The first three new Missions will be announced today:
- Green Powered Future – to demonstrate power systems in different geographies and climates able to integrate up to 100% variable renewable energy, such as wind and solar, by 2030.
- Clean Hydrogen – to make clean hydrogen cost competitive by reducing costs to USD $2 per kilogram by 2030.
- Zero-Emission Shipping – for ships capable of running on zero-emission fuels to make up at least 5% of the global deep-sea fleet by 2030.
Greenhouse Communications is leading global communications for Mission Innovation, from strategy to execution, including media engagement, social media activation, digital content production, video production, brand development and stakeholder relations.
We have collaborated with government ministers and senior private sector leaders to communicate the Mission Innovation vision and ambition, including the US, UK and Chilean Governments and Breakthrough Energy, among others.
In this crucial year for climate action, Mission Innovation 2.0 is bringing together governments from every continent to catalyse the action and investment that we need. Collaboration is key and Greenhouse have been amazing at leading our external engagement to ensure our message is heard worldwide.

The launch of Mission Innovation 2.0 brings together leaders from across governments, NGOs and the private sector in support of accelerating global action on innovation.
John Kerry, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate: “The Mission Innovation community will advance the technologies we need for slashing emissions across challenging applications including zero-carbon hydrogen, clean long-distance transportation, and carbon dioxide removal.”
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations: “Mission Innovation is playing a crucial role in accelerating solutions to address climate disruption.”
Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: “Mission Innovation 2.0 is a remarkable initiative that focuses on one of the most important challenges in the fight against climate change: the need for new affordable and accessible technology to generate clean energy.
Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency: “Mission Innovation is a clear example of how governments can work together in this critical area – and the IEA is committed to supporting these efforts to boost clean energy innovation to meet our shared climate goals.”
Adair Turner Chair, Energy Transitions Commission: “Accelerating action in this decade is key if we are to achieve mid-century targets and Mission Innovation is driving the innovations and technology required to make that possible.”
Jonah Goldman, Managing Director of Breakthrough Energy: “Since 2015, Mission Innovation has been an indispensable partner in driving the global clean energy agenda. Today, it is entering an exciting new phase in which an even greater focus on deployment, scale and market creation offer the promise of a decade of clean energy innovation
