Context and challenge

Food loss and waste are responsible for a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet food banks are often recognised primarily for their role in tackling hunger rather than climate change.

The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) wanted to reposition food banking as a powerful climate solution by creating a global campaign that united food banks, businesses, partners and supporters around a shared vision for reducing food waste while alleviating hunger.

Greenhouse was appointed to develop the #FoodForChange campaign, creating the messaging, creative platform and digital communications needed to engage audiences worldwide.

Our approach and strategy

Greenhouse developed an integrated campaign designed to communicate the environmental and social benefits of food banking through compelling storytelling, accessible creative assets and coordinated partner communications.

Key elements of the strategy included:

• Developing the #FoodForChange campaign positioning, messaging and visual identity.

• Producing a hero campaign animation alongside social assets and campaign content.

• Creating a partner toolkit with ready-to-use social copy and campaign resources.

• Delivering paid social campaigns across Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube.
• Partnering with India-based chef and Food for Change Champion Thomas Zacharias to extend campaign reach through trusted local voices.

Outcomes and impact

The campaign successfully repositioned food banking within the wider climate conversation, demonstrating how reducing food loss and waste can deliver both environmental and social benefits.

Through coordinated partner communications, influencer collaboration and paid campaigns, #FoodForChange reached audiences across multiple regions while providing food banks with practical tools to engage supporters and advocate for action.

Why this work matters

Food loss and waste account for around a third of all food produced globally and contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Food banks play a vital role in reducing this waste while improving food security, yet their environmental impact is often overlooked.

The #FoodForChange campaign helped shift this narrative, positioning food banking as a climate solution as well as a humanitarian one. By giving partners a shared campaign platform, practical communications tools and compelling creative assets, the campaign enabled organisations around the world to advocate with one voice, engage new audiences and demonstrate how tackling food waste can deliver benefits for both people and the planet.
